Landon Weather Story

Have you ever wanted to soar like a bird, where you would be free in the sky. A girl named Molly had always wanted to fly in an airplane.  She was ten years old and never had flown before. She always begged her parents to take a trip, to be able to fly like the birds up high.  She was so excited about flying until one day when she went to a fortune teller and he said “You will fly high and see all the trees  and the tops of the clouds, but a massive storm will hit you and send you off your path.” Molly gasped.  She couldn’t stop thinking about what the fortune teller had said.  What did she need to learn?

It was summer.  She had know idea what was going to happen this summer.  All she wanted to do was go on a trip, but would it be safe?  Later that day she rushed home to her mom shouting “mama mama mama” her mom was not home. She wondered where she was and as she waited she knew she had to take the fortune tellers words and learn about storms.  She didn’t know much about them and knew she wanted to learn.

Molly ran like a cheetah wanting to start right away. She went to the library and asked the librarian where were the storm books were. She grabbed the first book in a series called storm facts. It was about blizzards she grabbed all the info she needed. The library was just about to close as she rushed home to her mom.

When she got home she found her mom cooking dinner. “Mom I went to the library to learn all about storms.”

“That is great” said her mom. “what did you learn?”

“I learned all about Blizzards.”  Molly went on to tell her mom what she learned.   She told her mom blizzards are storms that happen when it is cold outside.  They happen when cold air goes under warm air.  Blizzards involve snow, hail and white outs.  White outs are when you can’t see in front of you because the snow is coming down so quickly.  Sometimes it’s because the winds are strong too.  A blizzard has to have winds that are 35 mph minimum.  And the wind has to last three hours or more.  Hail is balls of ice and snow that can be as big as a baseballs.  “Wow Molly you learned a lot today about blizzards.  Time for dinner so go wash your hands and we can tell your dad about blizzards too.”

The next day Molly was so excited she went straight downstairs and tried to go past her mom.  “Hey where are you going in such a hurry?”

Molly stopped quickly in her tracks and said, “Oh sorry mom I am going to the library”

“Again?”

“Yes again. I want to learn more about storms.”

Her mom said “Be back by 1:00.”

Then Molly skipped to the library remembering exactly where the books about thunderstorms were. She took her time reading and learning everything she could about thunderstorms. Molly looked up at the clock and realized she had to get home.  She zoomed out of the library at 1:00 she realized She was hungry because she did not even eat lunch. She was so busy studying the new type of storm.

She went home to her Mom again and this time she was on the phone with her grandmother. Molly had to wait and be patient while they talked.   Her mom hung up and Molly quickly told her all she learned about thunderstorms.  “Mom did you know that thunder is the sounds of lightning heating up the air?”  “Did you also know that thunderstorms sometimes give birth to tornados?” “How are you learning this much in such a short time?” said Molly’s mom. “I found books at the library and I love learning about storms.” Molly’s mom looked at her and said “Maybe someday you will be a weather woman?” ”Maybe” Molly said.  She wanted to keep sharing,  “Mom did you know Altocumulus and Nimbostratus clouds mean stormy weather like thunderstorms are coming? I can’t wait to learn more tomorrow.”

Again the next day Molly went to the library wondering which book was she going to get “Stop right there” said Mollys mom. “Take a break from the library.” “Mom” Molly groaned “I’m almost done with the series.” “I know but me and your dad said one family day when you were almost  done the series and you said okay so you take a break.”

Later that day Molly was bored so she decided to do something she knew would get her in trouble.  She snuck out to the library while her parents were doing yard work.  She knew she had to go as quick as she could so she read and read and it was her favorite book so far it was about tornadoes. When she went home her parents were still doing yard work.  They hadn’t noticed she was gone.  Later she told her dad the truth about sneaking out to the library.  Her dad was disappointed, but knew going to the library to learn was not a bad thing.  “You are not grounded, but tomorrow you will have to spend the day with us doing yard work”said Mollys dad. “Only” said Molly “if you let me tell you the facts and if I can go to the library before we start. Please Dad” said Molly. Molly’s dad thought about it and looked at her before he said “Deal.” “But I will have to tell you’re Mom Molly” said Molly’s dad.  Molly understood and said “Can I teach you both what I learned?” Molly and her Dad went to find her mom and after her mom told her how disappointed she was they both listened to Molly who was so excited to share.  “So I learned the other name for a tornado is a twister. Then I learned that there were 1,200 tornados in America in one year. There is also a scale that ranks tornados 1-5.” Molly’s mom interrupted saying “I would never want to be stuck in any tornado.”  Molly agreed but carried on.  “I also learned that you can find a lot more tornados in tornado alley which is in the middle of America in states like Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and more.  Good thing we don’t live there.” said Molly “I also learned that sometimes tornados come from thunderstorms.”  Her dad  and mom were very impressed with how much she learned.  They all stood up and her dad said “Come eat dinner.”  In the end the day turned out ok, but her mom was still mad.

So the next day Molly hopped out of bed and went and told her mom right away she was going to the library. She ran like a cheetah to the library to find her last book and it was about hurricanes. She learned and learned and she learned and when she was done she finally went home to her dad and mom. Molly couldn’t wait to tell them all about it as she ran into the house she couldn’t wait, ‘did you know that there is another scale to rank hurricanes. Mom also did you know hurricanes eyes are the calmest but the winds are stronger” said Molly to her mom and dad. They both said “No I did not know that.”  Molly also said to her parents “Also the hurricane is the deadliest storm in the world because of the bigness of  the storm they can stretch 100s of miles. But we have nothing to worry about because of storm warnings they help predict and tell us when a storm is coming.” “Wow” said Molly’s mom “You are a professional weather lady.”

Molly’s mom and dad told Molly because of all her hard work learning about weather they thought it was the perfect time to take their first family trip on a plane.  Molly was so excited she jumped up and down like Tigger.  The family went to Hawaii safe and sound knowing so much about weather even though there was rain there were no hurricanes, blizzards or tornadoes.  And it was fun watching thunderstorm on the ocean. She went on a airplane and her dream came true.
